For most of the couples the wish to have a child of their own is fulfilled almost as a matter of course. However, about 15% of all couples remain unintenionally childless.
About 45% of these infertility cases are due to problems with the man and 40% are due to problems with the woman. In 10% of the cases the infertility is a product of factors on both parts. However, 5% of all cases have no clear diagnosed cause even after thoroughly examinating both partners. This is referred to as idiopathic sterility.
The basis for fertility treatment has to be the sound partnership of the parents to be. Making their life's dream come true with the help of recognized medical techniques and with the utmost respect for the dignity of the unborn child.
Usually, each month, right after menstruation an ovule matures in a follicle in one of the ovaries within two weeks. Due to complex hormonal regulation mechanisms the ovulation is finally induced, the mature and fertile egg-cell enters the Fallopian tube and travels down into the cavity of the uterus. During sexual intercourse the sperm cells travel from the vault of the vagina through the cervix into the uterus and then into the Fallopian tubes where only one of them fertilizes the present egg.
Still being in the Fallopian tube the fertilized ovum, now called embryo, starts dividing while travelling down toward the uterus. It reaches the cavity of the uterus at approx. 4 - 5 days after ovulation, where it becomes embedded (implantation) 5 - 6 days after fertilization.
